Honoring the Trades That Keep Industry Moving: Happy National Skilled Trades Day
Every first Wednesday in May, the nation takes a moment to recognize the men and women who make our world work — the technicians, mechanics, welders, pipefitters, electricians, and skilled tradespeople of every kind who keep industries running, infrastructure sound, and communities thriving. Today is National Skilled Trades Day, and at Wood Equipment Company, it’s a day that hits close to home.
We’ve been serving Virginia’s and Maryland’s industrial, commercial, and municipal markets since our founding in 1945. For more than 80 years, our work — distributing and servicing pumps, drives, mixing systems, and controls — has depended entirely on skilled people who know their craft. So when a day comes along that says “stop and celebrate the trades,” we’re fully on board.
Why National Skilled Trades Day Matters
National Skilled Trades Day was established in 2019 to shine a light on a growing challenge: there are more skilled trades jobs available across the country than there are workers to fill them. Baby boomers are retiring faster than the next generation is entering the workforce, and the gap keeps widening.
The skilled trades are also frequently undervalued in public conversation. The idea that success only comes through a four-year college degree has left many students unaware of the excellent career opportunities available through technical training — opportunities that often come with less debt, faster entry into the workforce, and strong, long-term earning potential.
The reality is simple: the skilled trades hold our world together. The pumping systems that move clean water to your tap, the HVAC equipment that keeps facilities at the right temperature, the industrial machinery that powers manufacturing — all of it depends on people who have mastered a trade. That’s why today matters.
Investing in the Next Generation — Right Here in Virginia
Celebrating National Skilled Trades Day means more than posting about it — it means doing something about it. Earlier this year, we had the privilege of hosting Bryson Marshall, a senior at New Kent High School enrolled in their HVAC program, through a partnership with Bridging Communities, an organization that connects students with hands-on career experience in skilled trades and technical fields.
Bryson brought exactly the qualities that make a great tradesperson — curiosity, a strong work ethic, and a genuine willingness to learn. Through his internship with our team, he gained real-world exposure that goes far beyond what any classroom can offer. He also worked toward industry-recognized certifications, including OSHA 10 and EPA Universal — credentials that will open doors throughout his career.
That’s what workforce development in the skilled trades really looks like: experienced professionals and young talent working side by side, passing knowledge forward, and building the bench that our industries will depend on for decades to come.
A Foundation Built on Technical Excellence
Wood Equipment Company was built by skilled people — and it remains that way today. Our factory-trained and certified service technicians carry expertise across pumps, drives, mixing systems, and industrial controls. That level of technical mastery doesn’t happen overnight. It’s developed through hands-on training, mentorship, and a commitment to continuous learning.
We’ve been recognized by our manufacturer partners — Viking Pump, Sulzer Pump, Aurora Pump, and Netzsch — year after year for our technical performance and customer service. Those awards reflect the people behind the work: skilled tradespeople who take pride in doing things right.
How You Can Celebrate Today
National Skilled Trades Day is a great opportunity to take action, not just acknowledge. Here are a few ways to celebrate:
Thank a tradesperson. Whether it’s someone on your team, a vendor, or a service tech who’s kept your operation running — let them know their work is appreciated.
Support local programs. Organizations like Bridging Communities are doing critical work connecting students with trades careers. Look for ways to get involved in your area.
Talk to a young person about the trades. The earlier students learn what’s possible in skilled trades careers, the better. If you know a student who’s trying to figure out their path, share what you know.
Spread the word. Share this post and use #NationalSkilledTradesDay to amplify the message across your network.
From everyone at Wood Equipment Company — happy National Skilled Trades Day. To every technician, service professional, and tradesperson in our network: thank you for the work you do. The industries we serve wouldn’t function without you, and we’re proud to stand alongside you.
