How Progressive Cavity Pumps Actually Work
A progressive cavity pump moves fluid using a helical rotor turning inside a stator. As the rotor rotates, it forms a series of sealed cavities that progress steadily from suction to discharge, carrying the fluid along at a constant rate with minimal pulsation and low shear.
That mechanism is why progressive cavity technology performs where centrifugal and even many rotary lobe designs cannot:
Consistent, near pulsation free flow. The positive displacement action delivers steady output regardless of viscosity swings, which matters enormously in dosing and metering applications.
Gentle handling of shear sensitive media. The cavity design moves product without the aggressive mechanical action that can damage delicate solids, break emulsions, or degrade product quality.
Solids handling capability. Progressive cavity pumps can move media loaded with solids, fibrous material, and abrasive particulate that would tear apart other pump types.
Wide viscosity range. From near water thin liquids to media so thick it barely flows, the right rotor and stator combination extends performance across an enormous viscosity window.
Self priming and dry run tolerant designs. Depending on configuration, these pumps can prime themselves and tolerate intermittent dry running far better than centrifugal alternatives.
The tradeoff for that versatility is that rotor and stator selection matters. Elastomer compatibility, interference fit, and pressure per stage all have to be matched to the application, which is where distributor support earns its keep.
