Now Offering Chromalox Heat Tracing: Freeze Protection for Pipes, Tanks, and Valves

Insulation slows heat loss. It doesn’t stop it. When temperatures drop, exposed piping, tanks, and instrument lines can freeze even when they’re wrapped. A frozen line means downtime, damaged equipment, and a repair bill nobody planned for.

That’s why Wood Equipment Company is now partnering with Chromalox, one of the most established names in industrial heating.

Who Is Chromalox?

Chromalox has been in the heating business for over a century. The company was founded in Pittsburgh in 1917, built on Edwin L. Wiegand’s patent for an electric resistance heating element sealed inside a metal sheath. That idea is still at the heart of industrial electric heating today.

Now Chromalox designs and builds heat trace cable, controls, and thermal systems for plants, utilities, and commercial facilities around the world. It’s still headquartered in Pittsburgh.

What Is Heat Tracing?

Heat tracing is an electric heating cable installed along a pipe, vessel, or valve, usually under the insulation. It replaces the heat lost to the cold so the contents stay above freezing or at a required process temperature.

Chromalox self regulating heat trace takes it a step further. The cable adjusts its output to the temperature along the line, putting out more heat where the pipe is colder and less where it’s warmer. That means:

  • Reliable freeze protection without constant adjustment
  • Lower energy use than constant wattage systems
  • Less risk of overheating the line or the product
  • Cable that can be cut to length in the field and even overlapped without burning out

Chromalox Heat Trace Options

Chromalox offers self regulating cable families for different jobs:

  • SRL (low temperature): The go to for freeze protection on water lines, sprinkler piping, and general plant piping.
  • SRM/E (medium temperature): Higher output for process temperature maintenance and tougher conditions. Available in 120V or 240V with outputs from 5 to 20 watts per foot.

Pair the cable with Chromalox thermostats and controls, and the system only runs when it needs to. Connection kits, splices, and end seals complete the install.

Where Heat Tracing Makes Sense

Heat tracing is a fit anywhere a freeze would shut you down or a product needs to stay flowable:

  • Exposed water and process piping
  • Storage tanks and totes holding temperature sensitive products
  • Pump suction and discharge lines
  • Valves, instrument lines, and gauge connections
  • Viscous products like oils, resins, and asphalt that thicken in cold weather

It works across industrial plants, municipal water and wastewater facilities, and commercial buildings.

What We Need to Size Your System

Getting heat trace right comes down to a few details. When you reach out, have these handy:

  • Pipe size and material, or tank dimensions
  • Length of the run
  • Insulation type and thickness
  • The lowest temperature you expect to see
  • The temperature you need to maintain
  • Available voltage

Don’t have all of it? That’s fine. Our team can walk the site with you and figure it out.

Already Making a Difference

We saw the need almost immediately. Shortly after bringing Chromalox on, our team was at a plant where the first question was what to do about tracing their tanks before winter. We had the answer ready.

Why Buy Heat Tracing From Your Pump Partner?

Freeze protection and pumping go hand in hand. The lines feeding your pumps are the ones most at risk in winter. Working with Wood Equipment Company means one team looking at the whole system: the pump, the piping around it, and what it takes to keep everything running when the temperature drops.
