Sulzer Pumps in Virginia: What WEC Can Put on Your Floor
When a plant manager in Virginia calls us about a pump that is costing them money, the conversation almost never starts with a brand name. It starts with a problem. Flow is down. Energy cost is up. The seal keeps failing. The unit is thirty years old and nobody makes parts for it anymore.
Sulzer is one of the lines we reach for most often when we solve those problems, and Wood Equipment Company is proud to represent Sulzer across Virginia.
Sulzer is a world class manufacturer of pumps and fluid handling systems with more than 190 years of engineering behind it. What that means on your floor is a portfolio deep enough to cover almost any duty point you can hand us, engineered to efficiency and reliability standards that show up on your power bill and your maintenance log.
Here is what the line covers and how we help Virginia customers apply it.
The Sulzer Range, From Simple to Severe
End Suction and Overhung Pumps
The workhorse of any plant. Single stage, easy to maintain, and available in configurations that meet ISO, ANSI, and EN standards for process service.
For chemical, pulp and paper, food and beverage, and general industrial duty, Sulzer builds process pumps designed around low life cycle cost rather than low purchase price. That distinction matters more than most spec sheets admit. Over a typical service life, the purchase price of a centrifugal pump is a small fraction of what you spend on it. Energy and maintenance are the rest.
ANSI Process Pumps
If your plant standardizes on ANSI/ASME B73.1 dimensional interchangeability, you can drop a Sulzer process pump into an existing footprint without repiping or reworking the baseplate. That makes upgrades far less painful when you are trying to fix a chronic bad actor without shutting down half the line.
API 610 and ISO 13709 Pumps
For petroleum, petrochemical, and severe service applications, Sulzer builds to API 610 and ISO 13709 across overhung, between bearings, and vertically suspended configurations. If your specification calls for API compliance, the line covers it.
Multistage High Pressure Pumps
This is where the Sulzer engineering depth really shows. Axially split multistage and ring section stage casing designs handle boiler feed, condensate, water injection, reverse osmosis, brine re-injection, mine dewatering, and high pressure transfer.
Boiler feed is one of the most punishing duties in any facility. Hot water, high pressure, tight tolerances, and a service that cannot go down without taking the plant with it. Multistage pumps built for that duty are a different animal than a general purpose centrifugal, and specifying them correctly is not a catalog exercise.
Slurry, Sewage, and Specialty Pumps
Sulzer also builds heavy duty slurry pumps for abrasive and corrosive service, dry installed sewage pumps for municipal wastewater, and pumps qualified for nuclear safety applications.
Why Efficiency Is the Whole Argument
A centrifugal pump running off its best efficiency point does not just waste electricity. It vibrates, it loads the bearings unevenly, it eats seals, and it shortens the interval between rebuilds. Every one of those costs shows up somewhere in your budget, just not on the line item labeled “pumps.”
Hydraulic efficiency is the reason we push customers to take pump selection seriously instead of matching the nameplate on whatever failed. A pump selected to sit near its best efficiency point at the flow you actually run, rather than the flow someone estimated during design, will use less power and last longer. That is the entire value proposition, and it is why Sulzer’s investment in hydraulic design matters to a facility in Richmond just as much as it does to a refinery overseas.
What WEC Adds
A pump is only as good as the selection, the installation, and the support behind it. That is our job.
Application engineering. Send us the duty point, the liquid, the temperature, the specific gravity, the viscosity, and the system curve if you have one. If you do not have one, we will help you build it. We size for the conditions you actually run, not the conditions on the original drawing.
Full service repair shop. We repair, rebuild, and test pumps at our Ashland facility. Bringing a unit back to original performance is often the right answer, and we will tell you when it is and when it is not.
Parts and inventory. We keep parts moving so an unplanned outage does not become a multi week outage.
Field service and startup support. Factory trained technicians for installation, alignment, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
Custom fabricated skids. When you need a packaged system rather than a bare pump, we design and build it.
Drives, controls, and VFDs. Custom panels and variable frequency drives, because how you control the pump matters as much as which pump you bought.
Hands on training. We teach your operators and maintenance techs the equipment they run, in the classroom and on the bench.

Frequently Asked Questions
What types of Sulzer pumps can WEC supply? End suction and overhung pumps, ANSI and ISO process pumps, API 610 and ISO 13709 pumps, axially split and ring section multistage high pressure pumps, slurry pumps, and dry installed sewage pumps.
Can WEC service and repair Sulzer pumps? Yes. We operate a full service repair shop in Ashland and provide field service with factory trained technicians.
Do you help select the right pump? Yes. Send us your duty point, liquid properties, and system conditions and our application engineers will make a recommendation. If you are replacing a chronic problem pump, we will look at why it is failing before we quote a replacement.
